Some of you may have grown up watching Tales from the Crypt when it aired between 1989 and 1996 (7 seasons – 93 episodes), but did you know that the show was based on a comic book? The show took inspiration from the EC comic series of the same name which was originally published from 1950 to 1955.

The Cryptkeeper would sit in his decrepit mansion where he introduced each episode; he was an animated corpse controlled by a team of puppeteers. Tales from the Crypt was an anthology show meaning entirely new characters and story lines each episode, featuring a mixture of genres such as horror, fantasy, and even black comedy.

Airing on HBO, a premium cable channel, meant the show was allowed to feature plenty of profanity and graphic violence in the stories. Tales from the Crypt also had a long list of actors and musicians guest starring in episodes, including Whoopi Goldberg (Sister Act), Iggy Pop, and Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange).

The ’90s saw a number of Tales from the Crypt television and feature film spin-offs. 1995’s theatrical film, Demon Knight, was followed by Boredello of Blood in 1996. Sadly the third film never eventuated, but Hollywood will surely resurrect this franchise some day, making the trilogy a possibility.

Tales from the Cryptkeeper was an animated spin-off, but not a remake as it was intended for much younger audiences. The show ran for three seasons total and featured more age-appropriate stories. The first two seasons aired in 1993 and 1994. The third season saw a title change to New Tales from Cryptkeeper and it aired five years later in 1999.

With Tales from the Crypt comic books, a live-action television show, an animated show, and feature films, you have a number of options to influence your tattoo. Comic book style, realism, and stylised/new school styles are what come to our minds but, like anything else, any tattoo style would suit given the talent and creativity of your tattoo artist.

Licensing issues means that the show is not available on HBO’s streaming service. The series is on Amazon, but it’s rather expensive and there’s no guarantee that they’re not bootlegs. A Tales from the Crypt tattoo may require more research for you, but go ahead and try to recall what you can, or see what clips or screenshots you can find online, and go from there.
