Top 5 Song Parodies by The Merkins – Littered With Garbage

Who are The Merkins?

The Merkins produce horror-pop crossovers and parodies of hit songs from the past several decades. Since joining YouTube in 2015, they’ve gained a following of 377,000 subscribers and amassed over 60 million views.

We first discovered them as the Slashstreet Boys: five horror movie villains replacing the members of the Backstreet Boys.

We never asked for these songs, but now we can’t do without them. The Merkins are like the Weird Al Yankovic equivalent for the horror-pop genre.

Since we’re such huge fans, we’ve put together a list of our top five Merkins songs.

“As Long As You’re Bloody”

While not as close to the original music video (we’re sure Kevin, Howie, Brian, AJ and Nick weren’t dumping corpses into the water) we appreciate the super 90s vibes and clothing; Jason strangely looks good in that Nick Carter inspired wig.

“Every Life I Take”

We have a soft spot for this parody because we love The Police and Sting’s solo work, so much so that we’re even considering getting a Sting tattoo.

“I’ll Kill You That Way”

With a whopping 19 million views since its upload in October 2018, it’s amazing how referencing each villains backstory in the newly written lyrics is so well suited to a pop song. Blink 182 spoofed the “I Want It That Way” music video but we think The Merkins did it even better.

“Slashing Bodies”

(YouTube won’t allow us to embed the video, so click here to watch)

This was The Merkins first foray into boyband territory and what better song to first parody than “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)” from the Backstreet Boys?

The original song is so iconic, but so is this parody. The only complaint we have is that the song is under two minutes long; we’re left wanting more. Maybe The Merkins will revisit the song one day and bring us an extended/full version.

“Careless Sister”

George Michael Myers might just be the stand out star from The Merkins. This has surpassed Seether for my favourite “Careless Whisper” cover, even if it is a parody and not identical to the original.

Soon enough you’ll find yourself singing The Merkins lyrics even when listening to the original songs.

These Merkins song parodies could even provide some inspiration for a tattoo. Combine your love for 80s and 90s pop songs and your horror movie killer of choice – you’ll guarantee yourself one original tattoo of an iconic character.
