Thestrals are a winged horse from the Harry Potter universe. They have skeletal bodies in the shape of a horse, with bat-like wings and dragon-like faces. Just like sharks, and other predators, they are lured by the smell of blood.
Considered an elusive creature, Thestrals are only visible to those who have witnessed and accepted a death.
At one time Thestrals were ridden by several students (including Harry, Hermione, Ron and Luna) from Hogwarts to the Ministry of Magic; for those unable to see the Thestrals it would have been a shocking thing to witness.
