Last year The Karate Kid turned 35 – feeling old now?
Released in June of 1984, The Karate Kid was such a success that the martial arts drama film became a franchise. The original was followed in 1986 and 1989 by Part II and Part III.
The trilogy spawned a 1989 animated television series and the release of two video games.
In 1994’s The Next Karate Kid, Pat Morita returned as Mr Miyagi but the character of Daniel LaRusso was replaced by Julie Pierce (played by future Oscar winner, Hilary Swank).
There was, of course, a remake in 2010 starring Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith, but that’s best forgotten.
Cobra Kai debuted on YouTube Premium in 2018, with some of the original cast returning. Now in its second season, it is proof that The Karate Kid legacy lives on.
The Karate Kid is credited with popularising karate in the US – it was almost like the Rocky for younger generations.
