Cyndi Lauper Tattoo Inspiration – Littered With Garbage

Brooklyn born and Queens raised, Cyndi Lauper’s first musical release was the 1980 self-titled album with her band Blue Angel. She never intended to go solo, but after the band breaking up and going bankrupt, Cyndi got a second chance in the music industry and went on to become a star.

It’s been almost 40 years since Cyndi’s debut album She’s So Unusual (1983) was released; unusual she is, but she is loved all the more for it.

Cyndi had such a striking appearance with her wildly vibrant red, orange and yellow hair. It was actually purely coincidental that Hayley Williams from Paramore had similar hair for many years.

“True Colours” the title track from her 1986 sophomore album has been covered by countless number of artists; some notable versions include Phil Collins, Kasey Chambers, the cast of Glee, and Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake for the Trolls animated film.

Cyndi has gone on to release 11 studio albums, sell over 50 million records, and win many awards for her music. Her score for the Broadway musical, Kinky Boots lead her to win her first Tony Award.

Married to David Thornton (Home Alone 3 one of his many acting credits), he and Cyndi celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary this year.

A passionate supporter of L.G.B.T.Q.I.A.+ people, Cyndi created True Colours United which is her non-profit organisation that tackles youth homelessness in the community.

A Cyndi Lauper tattoo can be inspired by an album cover, music video, or a favourite photo, just like any other band or musician. However, there are some mashup ideas that we’ve thought of:

  • Cyndi has a connection with the wrestling industry – “Captain” Lou Albano starred as her father in the music video for “Girls Just Want to Have Fun”, and she was Wendi Richter’s manager at the inaugural WrestleMania;
  • Cyndi performed “The Goonies ‘R’ Good Enough” for the Goonies soundtrack;
  • Cyndi twice voiced herself on The Simpsons, so the tattoo could be her animated Simpsons self;
  • A recent Cyndi Lauper moment we love is when she surprised Cher by turning up on stage to perform “If I Could Turn Back Time” at the 2018 Kennedy Center Honors where Cher was one of the night’s honourees. We never knew the pair were such great friends – your tattoo could feature them both, or you can a friend get tattoos together, with one getting Cher and the other getting Cyndi.

Whatever your idea, we’d love to see your Cyndi Lauper tattoo – tag us on Instagram @litteredwithgarbage.
