Written, directed and produced by Cameron Crowe, Almost Famous is semi-autobiographical film based on Crowe’s life as a teenager when he went on the road with bands, and was writing for Rolling Stone magazine.
The film turned 20 last year and is set in the ’70s, following the fictional band of Stillwater. While the characters in Almost Famous are fictional, some moments were inspired by events which Crowe witnessed when working as a journalist.
The cast of Almost Famous included a huge list of stars and well-known actors including Frances McDormand (4 time Oscar Winner), Rainn Wilson (The Office), Kate Hudson, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Anna Paquin (Scream 4), Fairuza Balk (The Craft).
Critics loved the film – in addition to the soundtrack winning a Grammy, Almost Famous was nominated for four Academy Award and won for Best Original Screenplay. Despite the praise and awards, Almost Famous made only $47 million at the box office, which was $13 million less than its budget.
Tattoos of real bands and musicians are common in the tattoo community, as are ones inspired by films or TV, but how about tattoos of a fictional band from a film? Well, not so much. We couldn’t actually find a tattoo of Stillwater; Kate Hudson’s character, Penny Lane appears to be the preferred imagery for an Almost Famous tattoo. Which character or part of the movie is your favourite?
