The Hippogriff is a magical creature similar to a Griffin. While both creatures have the head, front legs and wings of an eagle, it is their back halves which differ; a Griffin has the rear of a lion and a Hippogriff has the body, hind legs, and tail of a horse.
Buckbeak (later renamed Witherwings) is likely the most well-known Hippogriff; however, this mythical creature has been around since long before Harry Potter.
The first recorded mention of the Hippogriff was made by the Latin poet Virgil in his Eclogues over 2000 years ago.
A Hippogriff tattoo could make for the perfect reminder of your Universal Studios experience, especially if the Flight of the Hippogriff roller coaster is your favourite ride at the The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
Or, if you’re someone who doesn’t want a tattoo that screams Harry Potter then, due to its long history and place in mythology, the Hippogriff or Buckbeak may appeal to you; the real reason behind the piece can be your little secret.
Now that you’ve settled on a Hippogriff, and you’ve got your inspiration here – now you just have to decide on a style and find the perfect tattoo artist. Go back over all the Harry Potter Month posts and there could be an artist who catches your eye.
