Barbie turns 60 next year, and over the past six decades in excess of a billion Barbie dolls have been sold worldwide. While the popularity and sales of actual Barbie dolls has declined in recent years, the number of people with at least one tattoo continues to grow.
Many, if not all, of you reading this probably owned a Barbie doll sometime in your life. The dolls likely evoke fond childhood memories, and perhaps that’s something which you’re wishing to express in the form of a tattoo.
There has, however, been negative press (and research) surrounding Barbie over the years, with the argument being that the dolls contribute to self-esteem issues in children. To the contrary, many people are now using tattoos as a form of self expression, and has resulted in them finally accepting themselves and their appearance – turns out that a Barbie tattoo may actually have a positive effect on people.
As Aqua sang, we’re all just Barbie girls living in a Barbie world, but the greastest thing about Barbie is that she could be anything she wanted to be, and so could you!
Unlike the doll and its many items of clothing and accessories, a Barbie tattoo can’t be changed once on your skin (unless you go through the pain and expense of laser removal), so please be diligent and do your artist research before getting tattooed.
