When Prince passed away suddenly, in such dramatic circumstances almost three years ago, the music world was in shock. With such an extensive song catalog, his words and his music will forever live on, but for some it was important to go that one step further and get a Prince tribute tattoo.
The majority of the Prince tattoos you’ll find online are of his signature glyph (a mix of Mars-male and Venus-female symbols), although (sadly) they’re not the best quality work.
When Prince made the decision to use this glyph, rather than his name, the media came to refer to him as The Artist Formerly Known as Prince from 1993 to 2000. The symbol has such a deep meaning beyond the music – we suggest giving this article from wired.com a read.
The glyph may not resonate with you as much as Prince’s music and lyrics and that is perfectly fine. With such a long career, there’s so much from which you can draw inspiration for your tattoo: his song lyrics, imagery inspired by a song, or a portrait of Prince in your chosen tattoo style.
For someone as unique and eclectic as Prince, he deserves to be memorialised in tattoo form much in the same fashion. Remember: Be Inspired. Never Copy.
