Top 15 Orangutan Tattoos

The orangutan is a great ape native to Indonesia and Malaysia. The animal’s name derives from those languages, with ‘orang’ and ‘hutan’ meaning¬† person and forest, respectively – an orangutan is literally a person of the forest.

Orangutans spend most of their days in the trees, unfortunately, loggers, palm oil plantations and forest fires means their natural habitat is being destroyed and they’re being killed in the process.¬†International Orangutan Day on August 19 is meant to bring awareness to the plight of these¬†critically endangered animals.

When it comes to animal tattoos it is often apparent that many people have used to same reference photos. These 15 tattoos are a refreshing change as they’re all truly so different from one another, in terms of both style and imagery. Very few tattoo ideas are unique anymore (most ideas have already been inked into someone’s skin) but true creativity is how you take an idea and make it your own.

A very real and sad fact is that tattoos may one day be the only remaining reminder of these beautiful creatures.
