Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994) was Jack Bernstein’s comedic take on Sherlock Holmes. The film was one of three starring Jim Carrey to be released in 1994 (the others being The Mask and Dumb and Dumber) after he made the leap from television (In Living Color) to the big screen.
The plot of the movie is that the mascot of the NFL team the Miami Dolphins has been stolen and Ace Venture is hired to locate him. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective co-starred Courteney Cox (Friends, Scream) and made over $100 million despite the poor reviews
The sequel,Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls (1995) again received negative reviews and yet managed to double the box office of the first film.
Ace Ventura is considered a franchise, as in addition to the two theatrical releases starring Jim Carrey, there has also been a made-for-television film, and an animated series.
Both of the Carrey-lead Ace Ventura films are so peak ’90s with their absurdly original plot, however that also means the inclusion of damaging stereotypes. The film featured an awful representation of transgender people (like many films at the time); you can still choose to enjoy the remainder of film whilst acknowledging this. Hollywood has come some way since then, but there’s always more work to be done.
A direct sequel is in the works which will make Ace Ventura a theatrical film trilogy, although it is unlikely to star Carrey in the lead role.
